Signing in.... Another lesson of technology in music education! Today we focused on understanding different image, video and audio formats, creating quality resources and making software tutorial videos and video editing in Screenflow. Combining these formats to create interactive digital media for learning with programs such as iBooks Author and Screenflow. As demonstrated in the image above, screen flow is a program that allows you to create a video tutorial that records yourself, your desktop and your voice allowing for a thorough step by step guide or instructional video for the viewer.
Screen flow makes tutorial making enjoyable for the creator and engagingly effective for the listener. In class today we also looked at ibooks author, which I found a great resources for many purposes, from creating instructional visual manuals, that included tutorial videos e.g. to learn how to play the piano to creating a children's book of your own. This resources shows an overall idea of what the final product should look like through easy to follow instructions. I plan to use this resource in my future educating career. Until next blog!!! Signing in... Welcome to another 'Technology in Music Education' Blog Post- 9/8/17 Today was all about use of cameras both DSLR cameras and Video cameras, lighting, microphones, tripods and video editing! I really enjoyed this lesson, I found it very informative while really fun to learn about. There are two main types of microphones, Condensers and Dynamics. Dynamic microphones target the sound right in front of the microphone however the Condenser microphones pick up the sound around the Mic. As a singer, I have great interest in the different microphones and their functions. Transferring this knowledge to the classroom may be handy, as I'd love to start up vocal ensemble groups and hold performances, in which Microphones will be used. Now! You probably think rolling a microphone cable is easy and straightforward, you just hold one end of the cable in your hand and wrap it around your elbow and back to your hand.... Well apparently this is incorrect. Below is the correct, quick and easy way to properly Roll a cable... Some other tips about filming and equipment use include:
Software specific for editing: ScreenFlow, iMovie and Final Cut Pro Until next time..... Signing off... Signing in...... Welcome!! For those of you who find it confusing, difficult or are just old school with the use of technology, you're not alone. I, myself find technology today a little challenging at times, however I am becoming a Music educator, therefore I need to utilise certain technologies in particular Music programs to best allow my students the music education they deserve. 'Technology in Music Education' is a unit that focuses on showing us as Music Educators the ins and outs of music programs and any short cuts that may save time while in the classroom. In my first Technology in Music Education class on the 2/8/17 with Dr. James Humberstone, we focused on and explored step sequencers including io808, Pulse Boy and Acid Machine 2. The beneficial aspect of using these sequencers in a Music classroom, is that they don't require any pre-existing musical knowledge or skill from the student (e.g. reading musical notation), therefore cater to a range of musical ability. Acid Machine 2 was one of the step sequencers we used in class. I found it quite straightforward and enjoyable to use. As shown below in the image, Acid Machine 2 is a grid-like program whereby you select the cells and it creates the piece, without use of musical notes or symbols, just simply selecting a cell! I've chosen to create a drum pattern in the image below, so reading the grid horizontally corresponds to what part of the drum kit I've selected. Each cell is easily selected by clicking and deleted by right clicking. To listen back simply press the space button on the keypad. All of the step sequencer programs have Audio and MIDI files for the user to utilise while creating. Fun Fact! Difference between Audio and MIDI: Audio is a recording and the capturing of real sound (using a microphone) The microphone has a diaphragm that is sensitive to the sound. The Vibration made between the sound and the microphone creates sound waves that push the air, creating pressure and this sound is captured. Because it is real sound captured, Audio can only be changed/ altered to a certain point. HOWEVER.... MIDI is not real sound therefore can be altered and edited, making it easier to work with. MIDI gives you the information about the music (e.g. like a score), when you record in MIDI, it records where you play the sound rather then what sound you play. All in all, the first class of 'Technology in Music Education' was a success. These quick and easy steps to music creating make music more enjoyable, engaging and allow students to experience music learning on a different platform.... the internet. Stay posted for my next blog! Signing off... Signing in..... Welcome back!! To another 'Technology in Music Education' class 4/8/17. The three main music notation software programs include Sibelius, Muse score and Finale. In todays class we focused on using Sibelius and I can tell you I learnt a lot about it in just 2 hours. Learning so much may have had something to do with our teacher Dr. James Humberstone being one of Sibelius' former software developers and he has even written the book 'Sibelius 7 Essentials' specific for music notation essentials, so you'd say he knows all there is to know about the software program! Some short cuts to using Sibelius-here they are!
Among the three leading software programs, Dorico is a newly created software, only created in late 2016 and is on the uprise. This software program is easy and logical to use and may just override the already established software programs, Finale and Muse score. While on the topic of new and upcoming software programs... check this out!! Although I am an apple Mac book user, this almost convinced me to convert to Microsoft. The new software StaffPad is quite impressive and makes music notation much easier and exciting. There is a whole world of musical notation software out there, Go and explore it!!!!
